What is Meridia?

Meridia (also known as Reductil, Raductil, Ectiva, Leptos, Obestat) is a prescription weight loss pill used, in combination with a healthful diet and exercise plan, for the short-term (a few weeks) treatment of obesity.

Meridia, the brand name of sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate, was introduced by Knoll Pharmaceutical Company as an antidepressant, but its effectiveness was limited.
It was found, however, to be an effective appetite suppressant and was approved for the treatment of obesity (a disease that affected nearly every fifth of the adult population worldwide) in November 1998.

In Meridia trials of 6-12 months in duration, patients taking 15 mg per day lost an average about 5% of initial body weight.

Who can take Meridia?

Meridia is for patients whose excess weight, in the opinion of their doctor, presents a health risk.

Meridia may be right for you if you are considerably overweight (a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater). Meridia may also be right for you if you are overweight (a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater) in the presence of other risk factors (e.g., high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, large waist measurement).

How does Meridia work?

Meridia increases the activity of two chemicals in the brain (serotonin and noradrenaline) which suppress appetite. As a result, feeling of fullness occurs sooner and it should lead to reduced food intake and, subsequently, to weight loss.

Taken once a day Meridia gives you a motivational start to healthy eating and helps you feel full with less food.

What are Meridia side effects?

Common side effects of Meridia include: dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, and constipation.

Meridia can increase blood pressure to a very small degree (on average 1-3 mm Hg).
Nevertheless, a small portion of patients (about 2%) experience significant increases in blood pressure.

Therefore, do not take Meridia if your blood pressure is not well controlled.

It is also contraindicated in persons with known cardiovascular disease or a history of stroke.

Your doctor should check your blood pressure and heart rate before you start Meridia and continue checking it regularly while you are using Meridia.

Meridia Precautions

Before using Meridia, tell your doctor your entire medical history, including:

  • any allergies (especially drug allergies),
  • liver or kidney disease,
  • high blood pressure or heart disease,
  • history of stroke or seizures,
  • certain eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa),
  • glaucoma (narrow angle), or history of gallstones.

Limit alcohol intake, as it may worsen certain side effects of this medication.

It is recommended that women of child-bearing age should use effective birth control while taking this medication. This drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using this drug.

It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.

Drug Interaction

Meridia is contraindicated if taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs).

Some antifungals and some antibiotics may increase blood levels (eg.ketoconazole, erythromycin, cylclosporin).

Some antiepileptic drugs make Meridia less effective by reducing blood levels (eg. phenobarbitone, phenytoin, carbamazepine).

Meridia should not be used at the same time as other medicines that increase serotonin levels in the brain (eg. sumatriptan, some opiod pain killers).

Meridia Storage

Capsules should be stored at 25°C (77°F). Brief periods at higher or lower temperatures, i.e., 15-30°C (59-86°F) are permitted. The medication should be stored in a tight, light-resistant container.
